Tens of thousands of Britons and other mourners around the world gathered weeping and laying flowers in front of Buckingham Palace to pay a personal tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died yesterday.
Several letters were left handwritten to "Your Majesty" and "our Queen" thanking her for her dedication and dedicated service during the 70 years she was on the throne, according to the "Daily Mail".
Throughout the day a growing sea of pink roses lay at the state entrance to the castle which lies at the end of the long tree-lined walkway.
Carefully written cards and messages by families were also placed alongside union flags and candles.
One of the messages said simply: Rest is peace, madam. Thank you for your dedication and service to your people over 70 years. You have been my favorite queen all my life in the Commonwealth and now in England.
Another praised the "only true legend of this country" and another commented "It doesn't seem realistic that the Queen is no longer with us because she has always been there and has always been such an important part of our lives."
