Google has warned Trump that it risks jeopardizing US national security if it continues to push for restrictions on exporting products to Huawei, seeking to continue to deal with the Chinese company on the US blacklist.
The Financial Times
quoted three well-informed sources as saying that Google's top executives are
pressing US officials to lift the export ban on Huawei without a license
from Washington.
The Trump administration announced the ban after the collapse of trade talks
between the United States and China, sparking protests from some of the
biggest US technology companies, which fear the consequences of the embargo.
Google is particularly concerned that it will not be allowed to update its
Android operating system on Huawei smart phones, and it fears that Huawei is
already developing its own version of the Android operating system away from
Google.
The Financial Times said its sources that Google argues that the version of
Huawei of the Android system will be more at risk of piracy. Huawei said it
will be able to develop its operating system "very quickly".
"Google argues that by preventing it from dealing with Huawei, the United
States risks creating two types of Android operating system: the original
version and the hybrid version. The hybrid version is likely to have more
holes than the original version, meaning phones will be more vulnerable to
penetration, not least by China. "
Washington has long been concerned that Beijing may use communications
equipment sold by Huawei to spy on Western countries. But since Donald Trump
took office as president, these concerns have come to the fore.
Last month, Trump announced a new set of measures targeting the Chinese
company. These include: giving the Ministry of Commerce the power to prevent
Huawei from selling 5G generation equipment in the United States, and a
blanket ban on US companies from selling their products to the Chinese
group.
After the ban, Google stopped its business with Huawei, cutting off future
updates to the Android system. But since then, the US administration has
given 90 days to companies to cut off dealings with them.
